I can't wait to see this film! Not only am I a huge fan of classic Hollywood musicals -films that, with their colorful bursts of song and dance, provide light-hearted escape from the dismal -but I also look forward to the emotional weight this movie promises to carry.
Art magazine Two Coats of Paint describes La La Land as director Damien Chazelle’s "contemplation of the clash between artistic ambition and personal happiness. ...It is a movie resolutely about art and its power not merely to elate and upset but also to clarify and resolve. ...And there is considerable art in the movie itself."
Though I will inevitably critique this film against the backdrop of classic cinema, I'm hoping it will stand on its own as a modern gem, and spur a resurgence of colorful throwback musical films.
