Reciprocity

I was honored to get the opportunity to work with STEPS Public Art to create a 155-sq-ft mural for the national BMO series that draws attention to the history of our area, its surviving landmarks, and the need for ecological harmony.

The Blue Heron —commonly found in Kitchener-Waterloo’s natural areas— is considered a good omen in Indigenous culture, representing grace, purity and patience.

The heron’s oversized presence in this design emphasizes the importance of ecological sustainability.

Olive branches held by both the heron and the human represent goals to peacefully coexist with nature.

Can you name all the local features?

The artwork gives viewers an aerial view of the Huron Natural Area. Waves from the Grand River represent the flow of time, from oldest history near the horizon to more recent additions in the foreground.

The winding river is dotted with these local historical landmarks:

KW historical landmarks in BMO mural illustration

  • Indigenous longhouse & campfire (Village artifacts were uncovered at the BMO construction site.)

  • Schneider Haus (Area’s oldest dwelling, circa 1856. Hosts interactive exhibits.)

  • Woodside National Historic Site (Victorian era home of Canada’s 10th Prime Minister.)

  • Pioneer Memorial Tower (1926, Commemorates arrival of Pennsylvanian German pioneers to the region in 1800.)

  • Victoria Park Clock Tower (Restored & installed 1995)

  • RBJ Schlegel Park / Sportsfield (Opened Spring 2020)

  • A modern-day KW city skyline is faintly visible on the horizon.
